Every app conversation has an expiry date. Chat too briefly and you are strangers; chat for weeks and you become pen pals. The sweet spot for suggesting a meeting is usually somewhere between day three and day ten — once you know you enjoy their messages, before the novelty fades.
The ask itself should be small, specific and easy to decline. “Want to grab a coffee this week?” beats “We should hang out sometime” because it can actually be answered. Attach it to something you have already discussed — a café they mentioned, a cuisine they love — and it stops feeling like a formal invitation.
Choose a venue that lowers the stakes: public, casual, daytime-friendly, and under ninety minutes. A great first meetup is not the most impressive plan; it is the one both people can relax inside.
“Rejection risk peaks in that one message,” says the SayHi team. “But remember: if the chat is going well, the other person is usually waiting for someone to be brave first. It might as well be you.”
And if the answer is a vague “maybe soon”, take it gracefully and keep chatting lightly. Timing is personal. The right person will meet you halfway — literally.
